Capturing the Spirit of Ground Dwellers: Unleashing the Power of Jiu-Jitsu with Jessica Sims

“Karina is awesome! I don’t like having my picture taken, but she was able to get to relax and enjoy myself. I highly recommend her!”

In a world where dreams are pursued and passions come to life, there are remarkable individuals like Jessica Sims, who embody the essence of living life to the fullest. Armed with determination, a zest for adventure, and an unwavering commitment to personal growth, Jessica has embarked on an extraordinary journey, immersing herself in the captivating world of Jiu-Jitsu. As I had the privilege to photograph Jessica, the driving force behind Ground Dwellers at The Woodlands Jiu-Jitsu Academy, for a Leading Women feature in Living Magazine in May 2023.

From an early age, Jessica Sims embraced life with a "just do it" attitude, fearlessly pursuing her dreams and discovering new passions along the way. Originally hailing from Alberta, Canada, she set her sights on California at the age of 19, driven by her pursuit of a show jumping career. Not content with just one passion, Jessica also delved into competitive dancing and rock climbing, exploring the heights of physical and artistic expression.

Jessica's journey eventually led her to the vast plains of Texas, where her love for horse training took root. In 2012, she broadened her horizons further by venturing into the oil and gas industry while simultaneously embracing the world of entrepreneurship. It was during this time that her desire to make a positive impact on others through the power of Jiu-Jitsu began to flourish.

In November 2022, fueled by her fervor for Jiu-Jitsu, Jessica partnered with Matt McFarlane to establish Ground Dwellers, a sanctuary where children and adults could find solace, strength, and personal growth. Ground Dwellers The Woodlands swiftly became more than just a Jiu-Jitsu academy; it became a passion project, a vibrant hub of individuals united by a common purpose.

When speaking about her journey, Jessica's face lights up with an undeniable joy. She firmly believes that Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most challenging and transformative experiences one can undertake. Eager to share this life-changing sport with her community, she asserts, "Teaching is one of the most fulfilling and purposeful things you can do with your life." As a role model for girls and women, Jessica takes great pride in helping others achieve their goals and aspirations.

Within the walls of Ground Dwellers, an extraordinary community blossoms. Jessica passionately describes it as "a big family and an open, welcoming community." Regardless of age or physical condition, Jiu-Jitsu at Ground Dwellers knows no boundaries. Jessica herself began her journey at the age of 40, and she proudly shares stories of individuals in their 90s still stepping onto the mat. It is an environment that nurtures personal growth, fosters camaraderie, and celebrates the indomitable spirit of its members.
